Ontario’s new government is firmly on the side of Ontario farmers and focused on strengthening our rural communities. Supply management provides a good return for hard working farmers, producing quality products while delivering consumers stable and affordable prices.
As the Minister of Rural Affairs, I’m deeply concerned to hear Ontario PC MPP Randy Hillier play fast and loose with the facts about supply management. Recently, on the floor of the Ontario Legislature, the Ontario PC member referred to the Chicken Farmers of Ontario and the Dairy Farmers of Ontario as “cartels”, and that supply management measures are “costly impediments” and “obstacles” in front of producers of local food. The supply management system has a proven track record of protecting Ontario farmers, food producers, processors and consumers from extreme market fluctuations experienced in other countries around the world. In fact, as a system that ensures that supply of eggs, milk and chicken is filled by local producers, supply management is local food success story.
The Ontario PCs are out of touch with rural communities when they attack a system that sustains such an important part of Ontario’s rural economy. Ontario’s new government remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening rural communities, growing our rural economy and creating jobs.
Your government understands that Ontario’s farmers are the backbone of our rural economy. It is reckless for Tim Hudak and the Ontario PCs to attack the livelihood of our farmers. Instead, they should support a proven system that delivers for farmers, producers and consumers alike.
