Creating New Manufacturing Jobs in Peterborough

Ontario Supports New Facility for Hydro Power Equipment Maker

February 11, 2014

Ontario is helping Andritz Hydro Ltd. open a new manufacturing facility while creating 13 new jobs and retaining 35 jobs in Peterborough.

Andritz makes equipment used in both new and refurbished hydro-electric generating stations. With support from the Eastern Ontario Development Fund, the Austria-based company is opening its first manufacturing facility in the province. The company has an existing engineering design and sales office in Peterborough (the 35 existing positions), which will become part of the new location.

The Eastern Ontario Development Fund is driving job creation and business growth, and was the model for the successful Southwestern Ontario Development Fund. Together, these two funds have strengthened local economies by creating and retaining more than 24,000 jobs.

Creating local jobs and growing the economy is part of the government's economic plan to invest in people, build modern infrastructure and support a dynamic and innovative business climate.

“Ontario is among North America’s manufacturing leaders, offering expertise at every step of the value chain, from R&D, through to advanced production. It’s great news that Andritz will be able to take full advantage of the province’s manufacturing strengths and another example of how the Eastern Ontario Development Fund is strengthening local economies.”

— Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment

“I’m delighted that Andritz is taking its Peterborough operations to the next level—adding manufacturing capacity alongside its engineering and sales functions. I thank the company for its ongoing confidence in our community and am pleased our government has the opportunity to be a partner in this important expansion.”

— Jeff Leal, Minister of Rural Affairs and MPP for Peterborough

“With the opening of our new Peterborough production facility, Andritz Hydro looks forward to providing our customers with an enhanced and further-integrated suite of products and services. Our continued focus on innovation and industry-leading reliability and quality is matched only by our longstanding commitment to hydropower as an economical and environmentally friendly form of energy generation.”

— Daniel Carrier, Vice President Operations, Andritz Hydro Ltd.

  • Ontario is providing a grant of $487,494 towards the project, which has a total value of $4,874,940.
  • Many hydropower plants around the world are more than 30 years old, creating a strong market for Andritz’s systems and services.
  • Ontario is accepting applications for the Eastern Ontario Development Fund from qualified businesses that are growing and creating jobs.
  • Sectors eligible for the fund include advanced manufacturing, processing, life sciences, information and communications technology, tourism and cultural industries.
  • Since 2008, the government has committed over $68 million in Eastern Ontario Development Funding, leveraging a total investment of more than $655 million. These investments have helped to create over 2,900 new jobs and retained more than 12,500 jobs in the region.
